Underwater Archaeology at Poompuhar

- Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology launched the third phase of exploration off Poompuhar (Kaveripoompattinam) on 6 September 2026.
- Covers ~250 sq km area, 2 km offshore, depths 2–60 m; 20-day survey ending 23 September.
- Uses side-scan sonar, echosounders and sub-bottom profilers.
- 25-member team including divers; guided by Prof. K. Rajan and Dr. Yatish Kumar.
- Linked to Sangam-era port; multi-phase project funded with ₹7 crore.
