World Oceans Day is celebrated annually on 8 June to raise awareness of the vital role of oceans in sustaining life on Earth and to encourage action for their protection and sustainable use.
Oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth’s surface and are essential for regulating climate, absorbing carbon dioxide and providing livelihoods for millions of people.
The day provides an opportunity to highlight the importance of oceans in biodiversity, marine life conservation and the global economy.
It is a reminder of the threats facing our oceans, including plastic pollution, overfishing, habitat destruction and climate change.
This year’s theme: Catalytic action for our ocean and climate.
