Japan is on high alert due to a surge in cases of streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS), a serious and potentially life-threatening bacterial infection

- There has been a sudden increase in cases of a rare but deadly human flesh-eating bacterial infection in Japan after COVID-19 restrictions were eased.
- The horrific condition, known as streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS), can kill within 48 hours of infection.
- Data from the National Institute of Infectious Diseases shows that Japan has recorded nearly 1,000 cases this year alone, far more than last year.
