Kozhikode in Kerala declared India’s first UNESCO ‘City of Literature’
  • Kerala’s Minister for Local Self-Government, M.B. Rajesh, announced on June 23 that Kozhikode has been honored as India’s first ‘City of Literature’ by UNESCO, celebrating its rich literary and cultural heritage.
  • Kozhikode's designation acknowledges its role akin to London’s global cultural significance, with contributions from renowned writers, including two Jnanpith awardees, as well as notable cinema, music, and media establishments.
  • Despite Kolkata's richer literary tradition, Kozhikode's achievement was attributed to effective planning and presentation by the city's Mayor and the Kerala Institute of Local Administration, showcasing Kozhikode’s accomplishments convincingly to UNESCO.
