Polymer Banknotes – RBI Field Trials

Government approved RBI proposal for 1 billion polymer notes each of ₹10 and ₹20 for field trials.
Announced by MoS Finance Pankaj Chaudhary.
Polymer notes last longer, resist moisture/dirt, have better security and lower replacement cost.
Paper notes will continue; polymer will not replace them.
Aimed at durability, reduced printing costs and performance testing across climates.
Earlier attempt (2012) abandoned; ~60 countries already use polymer notes.
Printing cost rose to ₹6,372.8 crore in 2024–25.
