MoSPI Replaces WPI with PPI as GDP Deflator
Published on 01 Aug 2026
- MoSPI will replace Wholesale Price Index (WPI) with Output Producer Price Index (PPI) as the GDP deflator for quarterly and annual estimates.
- PPI, released by DPIIT in June 2026, measures average price changes received by producers and better reflects production costs.
- Double deflation method will adjust output with Output PPI and inputs with relevant indices for accurate Real GVA.
- New GDP base year: 2022–23 (from 2011–12).
- Implementation from April–June 2026–27 quarter with revised back series.
- WPI continues to be published; CPI used for select items.
- Aims to align with international standards and improve real GDP accuracy.
