World Mosquito Day 2026

Observed on 20 August to mark Sir Ronald Ross’s 1897 discovery that female Anopheles mosquitoes transmit malaria.
Raises awareness on mosquito-borne diseases: dengue (Aedes), malaria (Anopheles), chikungunya (Aedes), Japanese Encephalitis (Culex) and Zika.
Key challenges: seasonal outbreaks, delayed detection, healthcare pressure and economic loss.
Prevention focuses on eliminating stagnant water, sealing tanks, cleaning coolers/gutters and personal protection (repellents, nets, screens).
Community participation and timely medical care are essential for control.
