India Announces Opium Poppy Licensing Policy for 2025-26

The Government of India has announced the 2025-26 opium poppy cultivation policy, which will run from October 1, 2025, to September 30, 2026. It covers Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. Farmers who grow high yields (4.2 kg per hectare or more) will continue with opium gum cultivation. Those with medium yields (3.0–4.2 kg per hectare) can grow unlanced poppy straw (CPS) under five-year licenses. CPS farmers producing 900 kg per hectare or more are encouraged to switch to opium gum, while farmers producing less than 800 kg per hectare may lose their license. The Government Alkaloid Factory in Neemuch has earned WHO GMP certification, helping India make more medicines from opium safely. The policy supports farmers, medical needs, and self-reliance.
