New Monkey Species Discovered in Congo
  • Scientists identified a new colobus monkey species, Colobus congoensis (locally “Likweli”), in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
  • Features: Black fur, pinkish-orange lips, white anal patch; genetically distinct from Colobus satanas.
  • Habitat: Small range (~1,700 sq km) between Lomami and Lilo rivers in Lomami National Park, Congo Basin.
  • Recommended as Endangered by IUCN due to limited range and threats.
  • Fifth new African monkey species in 75 years; discovery published in PLOS One on July 15, 2026.
