Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill

The Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026, is scheduled for introduction in the Lok Sabha during the Monsoon Session starting 20 July 2026. It seeks to extend statutory protection to Vande Mataram, similar to the national anthem Jana Gana Mana, under the 1971 Act.
Vande Mataram, from Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s 1882 novel Anandamath, will receive legal safeguards against insults. On 9 July 2026, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs directed that all six stanzas be played before Jana Gana Mana at official events. Violations may attract up to three years' imprisonment or fine.
