Bihar-Jharkhand Sone river water-sharing pact

- Bihar and Jharkhand signed a Sone river water-sharing agreement on 31 August 2026, ending a 25-year dispute since Jharkhand’s creation in 2000.
- Allocation: 5.75 MAF to Bihar and 2.0 MAF to Jharkhand (total 7.75 MAF as per undivided Bihar’s share under 1973 Bansagar Agreement).
- Mediated by Union Ministry of Jal Shakti via CWC committee; breakthrough at Eastern Zonal Council meeting (July 2025) chaired by Amit Shah.
- Bihar Cabinet approved the draft on 13 January 2026.
- Linked to the Sone canal system irrigating Bhojpur, Buxar, Rohtas, Kaimur, Aurangabad, Patna, Gaya and Arwal.
