Harsh Chouhan resigns as NCST chairman eight months before end of term

National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) Chairman Harsh Chouhan resigned with eight months left for his term to end.
Chouhan, a social rights activist who hails from Madhya Pradesh, resigned on June 26.
His resignation was accepted by President Droupadi Murmu.
He was appointed as the chairman of the NCST in February 2021 for a three-year term.
Chouhan has worked extensively for tribals in Madhya Pradesh and has been associated with Sangh bodies, including the Akhil Bharatiya Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram.
The NCST has now been left with just one member, as the post of Vice Chairperson has remained vacant since July 2019 after Anasuya Uikey was appointed Governor.
The chairperson, vice-chairperson and members of the NCST are appointed by the President for three years from the date of assumption of charge.
The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes is a constitutional body that was established by the Constitution (89th Amendment) Act, 2003. The Commission is an authority working for the economic development of Scheduled Tribes in India.
