Shankari Chandran, novelist of Sri Lankan descent, wins Australia’s Miles Franklin Literary Award

Shankari Chandran won the 2023 Miles Franklin Literary Award for her novel Chai Time at Cinnamon Gardens.
The story of the novel focuses in a western Sydney suburb, where a Sri Lankan native describes the lives of people from an old-age home who left the country in the 80s to escape the civil war.
The Miles Franklin Literary Award is an annual prize given to “a novel which is of the highest literary merit and presents Australian life in any of its phases”.
The Miles Franklin Literary Award is one of the prestigious literary awards in Australia.
Previous winners of the award include Thea Astley, Jessica Anderson, Tim Winton, among others.
