Byculla Railway Station Receives UNESCO Award for Heritage Restoration and Modernization

Byculla railway station, which is 169 years old, received the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award of Merit for cultural heritage restoration and conservation.
This railway station on the Central line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway.
The restoration project began in July 2019, aiming to bring back the station’s original architectural glory.
The project was initiated by Shaina NC Trustee, I Love Mumbai, in memory of her father Nana Chudasama, with support from Bajaj Trust Groups and Abha Narain Lambah Associates as their CSR initiative.
Minal Bajaj and Niraj Bajaj of Bajaj Group and Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation funded the restoration project with over four crore rupees.
Heritage Conservation Architect Abha Narain Lambah led the restoration project pro bono as part of their CSR initiative.
The restoration work was completed on 29.4.2022 and was inaugurated by Raosaheb Dadarao Patil Danve, Minister of State for Railways, Government of India, along with other dignitaries.
Various aspects of the station were restored and beautified, including the main entry/façade of platform number 1, exit passage of platform number 1, garden area facing the façade, walls, grills, FOBs, toilets, water huts, benches, LED lighting, and more.
Byculla station now represents a blend of history and heritage while offering modern amenities.
