• The Government of India has approved the appointment of Ajay Kumar Srivastava as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Indian Overseas Bank  for a three year term with effect from 1 January 2023.
• Ajay Kumar Srivastava is presently the Executive Director in the bank.
• The present MD and CEO of IOB, Partha Pratim Sengupta’s tenure ends on 31 December 2022.
• It is a public sector bank owned by the government of India 
• The Indian Overseas bank was founded by M. Chidambaram Chettyar in 1937.
• It was nationalized by the government of India in 1969.

• Senior advocate R. Venkataramani has been appointed as the new Attorney General (AG) of India by President Droupadi Murmu for a period of three years.
• The announcement came two days before current AG KK Venugopal's term ends.
• He will succeed K K Venugopal, whose term will end on September 30.
• Venugopal, 91, was appointed to the post in July 2017.
• Senior advocate R Venkataramani has an experience of 42 years as a senior Supreme Court lawyer. He had formerly served as a member of the Law Commission of India.
• The A-G is the first law officer of the Government of India and the position of the A-G is placed on a special footing. The A-G is appointed by the President of India and has the right to audience across all courts in a country.

• NASSCOM-established leading industry body Data Security Council of India (DSCI) appointed senior vice president Vinayak Godse to the position of CEO.
• Godse will take over the charge from Rama Vedashree, who has led DSCI for the past six years.
• Godse will be taking over as the CEO from October 1.
• Vinayak Godse has been a part of Data Security Council of India (DSCI) from its foundation and has more than 27 years of experience in telecom infrastructure, information security, and IT transformation.

• Odisha became the first state to publish an encyclopedia based on tribal communities. The “Encyclopedia of Tribes in Odisha” was unveiled by state chief minister Navin Patnaik on September 26, 2022.
• Tribes, as per 2011 census, account for 22.85% of the Odisha’s total population.  Odisha is home to third largest tribal population of India, but it is the most diverse indigenous communities found in the country.
• The 418 articles in the Encyclopedia have been published in the Adivasi journal and other publications over the last six decades. 
• The chief minister inaugurated the Tribal Museum in 2001, and the second Museum in 2009.

• The West zone has defeated the South zone by 294 runs to win their 19th title in the final day of the 2022 Duleep Trophy at the SNR College Cricket Ground, Coimbatore. 
• The 2022 Duleep trophy was the 59th season of the Duleep Trophy. 
• Sarfaraz Khan scored the most runs with 127 runs for 178 balls and Jaydev Unadkat of the West zone became the player of the series. 
• Yashasvi Jaiswal of the West zone scored 265 runs in the second innings which helped the west zone to hit a win while Kerala Opener Rohan Kunnummal scored 93 runs in the South zone’s second innings.
• Duleep Trophy is also known as the Mastercard Duleep trophy for its sponsorship and it is also the first­class cricket tournament in India. It is named after Duleepsinhji of Nawanagar, who is also known as Duleep.

• World Heart Day is observed every year on 29 September, and it is celebrated to raise awareness about heart health, the growing concerns of cardiovascular diseases, the effects of excessive exercise on the heart and how heart care is extremely important.
• Antoni Bayés de Luna, who served as the World Heart Federation's president from 1997 to 1999, had come up with this idea. 
• World Heart Day was originally celebrated on September 24, 2000, and up until 2011, it was marked as the final Sunday in September. 
• The theme for World Heart Day 2022 is 'USE HEART FOR EVERY HEART'.

• Former Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Monday announced the name of his new party. 
• It has been named 'Democratic Azad Party'.
• Azad had quit the Congress on August 26.
• Ghulam Nabi Azad also unveiled the flag of the Democratic Azad Party. The flag has three colours - mustard, white and blue.
• Azad was the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir from 2005 to 2008. He was also the leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, as a member of the Congress.

• As part of its efforts to conserve tigers, the Uttar Pradesh government has approved the establishment of the first tiger reserve in Bundelkhand's Ranipur Wildlife Sanctuary.
• They also approved notifying Ranipur Wildlife Sanctuary under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.  
• With this new tiger reserve, the total number of tiger reserves in UP will go up to four.
• The other three tiger reserves are: Dudhwa Tiger Reserve in Lakhimpur, Pilibhit Tiger Reserve in Pilibhit, Amangarh Tiger Reserve (a buffer zone of Corbett Tiger Reserve) in Bijnor.
• The tiger reserves of India were set up in 1973 and are governed by Project Tiger, which is administrated by the National Tiger Conservation Authority. Until now, India has a total of 53 protected areas that have been designated tiger reserves.

• The Centre announced the appointment of Lt General Anil Chauhan (Retired) as the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).
• The post of CDS was lying vacant since December 8, 2021, when the first CDS General Bipin Rawat died in a helicopter accident in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. 
• The post of the CDS was created on 24 December 2019.
• He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and Indian Military Academy, Dehradun.
• He is known China expert who retired as the Eastern Army Command chief in May last year.
• The chiefs of the three services i.e. 'Chief of Defense Staff' retires at the age of 62 years.

• The Indian government has declared Popular Front of India (PFI) and its associates or affiliates as an unlawful association with immediate effect for five years.
• The ban on the Popular Front of India will be followed by seizure of properties linked to the organisation and freezing of its bank accounts.
• The Popular Front of India was created in 2007 through the merger of three Muslim organisations in southern India.

• Saudi Arabia's King Salman bin Abdulaziz named his son and heir Prince Mohammed bin Salman as the kingdom's Prime Minister and his second son Prince Khalid as Defence Minister.
• Prince Mohammed, who has already been the kingdom's de facto ruler for several years, previously served as deputy prime minister under King Salman as well as defence minister.

• Giorgia Meloni, the leader of the Brothers of Italy party won the election on September 25, 2022, and is set to become the first female Prime Minister of Italy. 
• Meloni won the election with a huge margin and that too of a right-wing government.
• She was also Italy's youngest ever minister at age 31 when she was given the youth portfolio in Berlusconi's 2008 government.

• A NASA spacecraft has changed the orbit of the asteroid Dimorphos heading towards Earth as part of the Dart mission.
• The DART mission, or the Double Asteroid Redirection Test, launched 10 months ago (24 November 2021).
• Dimorphos is a small asteroid moonlet orbiting the near-Earth asteroid Didymos.
• Mission control at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland.
• DART stands for Double Asteroid Redirection Test.
• The $325 million DART mission was launched into orbit on November 24, 2021, from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

• Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot inaugurated 512 new Indira Rasoi in the Jodhpur, Rajasthan.
• The total number of Indira Rasoi in the state has reached 870, of which 378 are already in existence.
• It should be noted that Gehlot began 358 permanent kitchens in 213 urban bodies in August 2020, with the concept of 'No One Sleeps Hungry.'
• The poor are given a one-time meal for Rs 8 through Indira Rasoi. The scheme provided a subsidy of Rs 12 per plate to kitchen operators, which was increased to Rs 17 per plate on January 1, 2022.

• World Rabies Day is commemorated on September 28 every year. It is a global health observance day that began in 2007 to raise awareness about the impact of the world’s deadliest infectious disease on humans and animals.
• Dogs are the primary source of rabies infection in humans. In some cases, bats are the culprit as well.
• This year’s theme for World Rabies Day - ‘Rabies: One Health, Zero Deaths’ will highlight the connection of the environment with both people and animals.
• World Rabies day marks the death anniversary of Louis Pasteur who, with the collaboration of his colleagues, developed the first efficacious rabies vaccine.
• Louis Pasteur is a French biologist, microbiologist and chemist, Louis Pasteur, who developed the first rabies vaccine in 1885.

• The Union Rural Development Ministry launched a mobile app that will enable gram rojgar sahayaks to measure the water level of selected wells twice a year - before and after the monsoon.
• The Jaldoot app was launched jointly by ministers of state in the Rural Development Ministry Faggan Singh Kulaste and Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti and MoS in the Panchayati Raj Ministry Kapil Moreshwar Patil.
• Jaldoots will manually measure the water levels in 2-3 wells in each village and upload geo-tagged images on the app.
• This Mobile app will work in both online and offline mode. So water level can be captured even without internet connectivity and captured date will be stored in mobile and when mobile comes in the connectivity area, data will synchronize with the central server.

• The Indian Railways has installed lifts and escalators at 497 stations across the country so far to provide ease of movement for ’divyangjans’ or persons with disabilities, aged and children.
• As a part of ‘Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan’, to provide ease of movement to the differently-abled, aged and children on railway platforms, Indian Railways is installing lifts and escalators at railway stations across the country.
• So far, 1090 escalators at 339 stations have been provided up to August 2022.
• Such facility would facilitate improvement at the exit or entry of passengers and is a further step to improve passenger safety as well.

• Veteran actress Asha Parekh has been declared the recipient of the 2020 Dadasaheb Phalke award, making her the 52nd awardee of the honour. 
• The Dadasaheb Phalke committee comprises industry legends Asha Bhosle, Hema Malini, Udit Narayan, Poonam Dhillon and TS Nagabharana.
• Southern film superstar Rajinikanth was the recipient of the last Dadasaheb Phalke award.
• Dadasaheb Phalke award is the highest recognition in the field of Indian cinema. Bollywood stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Manoj Kumar, Vinodh Khanna, Sashi Kapoor and Dev Anand are among the recipients of the prestigious award.
• Established in 1954, the awards that come under the I&B ministry are being organised by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) for the first time after all the government’s film units were integrated under its ambit.

• The DRDO successfully flights tested the Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missile in Chandipur off the coast of Odisha.
• The 'VSHORADS' is an air defence system designed and developed indigenously by Hyderabad-based Research Centre Imarat of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
• The missile, meant for neutralising low-altitude aerial threats at short ranges, is propelled by a dual-thrust solid motor.
• The design of the missile and its launcher has been highly optimised to ensure easy portability.

• A book titled "Wildlife India @50" edited by Manoj Kumar Misra and published by Rupa Publication India. The book was published in the 50th anniversary of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 (9th September).
• The book captures India's 50-year-long wildlife journey through the eyes and experiences of a diverse set of authors who themselves played a part in it.
• It also highlights various concerns including trading of wildlife products and the increasing loss of natural habitat, cheetah extinction etc.
• Manoj Kumar Misra is a former member of the Indian Forest Service (IFS). 
• He also headed TRAFFIC India, a division of WWF-India.

• IFS officer Bandaru Wilsonbabu, presently joint secretary in the ministry of external affairs, has been appointed as the next ambassador of India to the Republic of Madagascar.
• Wilsonbabu, who has served as the joint Secretary in the Eurasia division, will be replacing Ambassador Abhay Kumar.
• There are about 17 500 persons of Indian origin in Madagascar, including approximately 2500 Indian passport holders.

• Senior bureaucrat Rajendra Kumar has been appointed the director general of the Employees' State Insurance Corporation.
• Kumar, a 1992-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Tamil Nadu cadre, is currently an additional secretary in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
• ESIC, Chairman: Minister of State for Labour & Employment (Independent Charge).

• The government has launched the indigenously-developed AVGAS 100 LL, a special aviation fuel meant for piston engine aircrafts and unmanned Ariel vehicles.
• It has been developed by Indian Oil Corporation.
• Currently, India is importing this product from European countries.
• IndianOil launched the fuel at an event hosted at Hindan Airforce Station in the presence of senior officials from Indian Airforce.

• The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu inaugurates HAL’s state-of-the-art Integrated Cryogenic Engine Manufacturing Facility (ICMF) in Bengaluru on September 27, 2022. 
• The facility, which would be spread out over an of 4,500-square metres, will cater to the entire rocket engine manufacturing facility for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
• In 2013 a MoU was signed with ISRO for establishing the facility for manufacturing of Cryogenic Engine modules at Aerospace Division of HAL. The MoU for the Cryogenic Engine facility was subsequently amended in 2016 for building of ICMF at Rs. 208 crores.
• HAL Aerospace Division manufactures liquid propellant tanks and launch vehicle structures of PSLV, GSLV MK-II, GSLV Mk-III and also stage integration for GSLV Mk-II.
• On January 5, 2014 India successfully flew GSLV-D5 with a cryogenic engine (made by ISRO through private industries) and became the sixth country in developing cryogenic engines.

• Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel is going to start a campaign named 'Hamar Beti- Hamar Mann' with the aim of empowering and securing the daughters of the state.
• The 'Hamar Beti-Hummer Maan' scheme will be started for the safety of daughters, to protect their honour and to facilitate them.
• Under the campaign, lady police officers and personnel will visit schools and colleges in the state to hold discussions and give guidance on legal rights, good touch-bad touch and preventive measures against sexual harassment and exploitation, cybercrime and social media-related crime, to girl students.
• A helpline number will also be issued under the Hamar Beti Hamar Maan campaign. Details on the women’s safety app and its use will also be shared with the school- and college-going girls.

• Team World captured its first Laver Cup crown in five attempts by defeating Team Europe, 13-8.
• Frances Tiafoe cemented the victory by saving four match points against Stefanos Tsitsipas for a stunning comeback effort, 1-6, 7-6 (11) [10-8].
• The Laver Cup, held from September 23 to 25 in London, is a men's tennis tournament played between players from Europe and and players from the rest of the world.

• Every year the United Nations observes World Tourism Day on 27 September. It is a day to support travel because it not only improves our lives but is also vital for a nation’s politics and economics.
• The official celebration of World Tourism Day 2022 has been organized this year in Bali, Indonesia with the theme of 'Rethinking Tourism'.
• The main reason purpose for observation of this day is to spread and foster awareness of travel and tourism.
• World Tourism Day was established by the UN World Tourism Organization in September 1979, and its inaugural events took place on September 27.
• The late Ignatius Amaduwa Atigbi, a Nigerian national, was the one who proposed the idea of marking September 27 of every year as World Tourism Day.
• The Indian government established January 25 as the National Tourism Day to raise awareness about the importance of tourism to the country’s economy.

• Gilles Brassard (Université de Montréal) has awarded the 2023 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics for his foundational work in quantum information, the world’s largest science prize. He shares this prize with Charles H. Bennett, David Deutsch and Peter Shor.
• In mathematics Daniel Spielman of Yale University was given recognition for multiple discoveries in theoretical computer science and mathematics.
• In Life Science Clifford Brangwynne and Anthony Hyman received the prize for discovering a new mechanism of cellular organization. Demis Hassabis and John Jumper were recognized for the development of AlphaFold, which predicts the structure of proteins. The prize was also given to Emmanuel Mignot and Masashi Yanagisawa for the discovery of causes of narcolepsy – the chronic sleep disorder characterized by overwhelming daytime drowsiness and sudden attacks of sleep.
• The Breakthrough Prizes, created in 2010 by a group of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, are the most richly endowed awards in science, disbursing more than the Nobel prizes.
• The Breakthrough Prizes are international awards conferred under three categories – mathematics, fundamental physics and life sciences.
• The Breakthrough Prizes were conferred for the first time in 2012 and the ceremony was hosted by Morgan Freeman.
• Awardees receive 3 million USD each in prize money, which is higher than the 1 million USD received by Nobel laureates.
• This year, three prizes were conferred in the life sciences category, one for mathematics and one for fundamental physics.

• The Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) has been awarded the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) award 2022 by the Airport Council International (ACI). 
• The award is considered to be the highest honour in the global aviation sector. 
• It ensured seamless traffic and reinforced passenger satisfaction in the aftermath of the pandemic.
• CIAL received the award in the 5-15 million passenger category of airports operating in the Asia-Pacific region.

• Oscar-winner Louise Fletcher passed away at the age of 88.
• Louise Fletcher, who won the best actress Oscar for her unforgettable performance as Nurse Ratched in Milos Forman's 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
• The movie 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' became the first in more than 40 years to win all of the major awards, including best picture, director, actor, actress, and screenplay.
• Fletcher became just the third woman to receive an Oscar, a BAFTA, and a Golden Globe for the same performance after winning her Oscar.
• Her final role was as Rosie in the Netflix series Girlboss (2017).

• Super Typhoon Noru slammed into the Philippines Sunday, battering the heavily populated main island of Luzon with strong winds and heavy rain that have forced hundreds of people to flee their homes.
• Noru, known locally as Karding, first made landfall as a super typhoon, but later weakened at 20:20 local time (12:20 GMT) on Sunday.
• It was last located over the coastal waters of Zambales province in central Luzon and headed to the South China Sea on its way to Vietnam.

• K Raja Prasad Reddy from Telugu daily Sakshi has been elected as the president of the Indian Newspaper Society (INS).
• Reddy succeeds Mohit Jain of the Economic Times.
• Rakesh Sharma from Aaj Samaj, a Hindi language newspaper, was elected as the INS deputy president and Mathrubhumi Arogya Masika's M V Shreyams Kumar the society's vice president at its 83rd annual general meeting.

• RailTel Corporation of India Limited announced the appointment of Sanjai Kumar as Chairman & Managing Director of the company.
• He is an officer of the Indian Railway Service of Signal Engineers (IRSSE) with around 30 years of varied experience in Railway functioning, Project Management and marketing.
• RailTel, a Mini Ratna (Category-I) Central Public Sector Enterprise, is an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) provider and one of the largest neutral telecom infrastructure providers in the country.

• The Indian Army and Defence Geoinformatics and Research Establishment (DGRE) jointly installed India’s first avalanche monitoring radar in North Sikkim.
• The radar was inaugurated by Lieutenant General Tarn Kumar Aich, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, General Officer Commanding TriShakti Corps on September 20, 2022, at one of the Forward Posts of the Indian Army deployed at an altitude of 15,000 feet in Sikkim.
• It has the capability to detect avalanches within three seconds of its trigger and will assist in saving troops’ lives and reducing damage to property in super high altitude areas.
• This radar uses a series of short micro wave pulses which are scattered at the target and can detect an avalanche in less than three seconds.
• The avalanche radar was made operational by Defence Research and Development Organisation’s wing DGRE, which is involved in forecasting and mitigation of avalanche hazards faced by Indian Army in the Himalayan region.

• Legendary Indian women's cricket fast bowler Jhulan Goswami has retired from international cricket on 24 September 2022.
• She has recorded his last match as a win against England.
• It was her last International cricket match.
• Jhulan Gowswami started her International career against England in 2002 as a fast bowler. At one time she was the fastest bowler in international women cricket.
• The 39-year-old Jhulan has played 12 Tests, 203 ODIs and 68 T20Is for India, and has picked up 353 wickets across formats. Of those, 253 wickets have come in ODIs where she is the highest wicket-taker in women's cricket. 
• She is at present the only women cricketer who has more than 200 wickets in ODI.

• Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya is one of the most notable personalities in the history of Indian politics. 
• To commemorate his birth anniversary, September 25 is celebrated as Antyodaya Diwas. 
• Antyodaya is a concept developed by Upadhyay, which literally means, “the rise of the last person.”
• Upadhyay was one of the ideological leaders and moral inspirations for the ruling party of India.
• He was the co-founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS) and a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) thinker.
• This day inspires the government and the people to help in bringing prosperity and success to those communities who are considered the weakest sections of society today, it aims to provide inclusive growth to the country so that no member of the society is left behind.

• The flagship program of the Government of India, 'Make in India’ completed 8 years on 25 September 2022. 
• The programme was launched by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 to transform the country into a leading global manufacturing and investment destination.
• The initiative is an effort of the government to attract foreign investors to invest in India.
• Make In India has substantial accomplishments across 27 sectors. These include strategic sectors of manufacturing and services as well.
• To attract foreign investments, Government of India has put in place a liberal and transparent policy wherein most sectors are open to FDI under the automatic route.

• Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has inaugurated an e-learning platform named "Bharat Vidya".
• Bharat Vidya is a first-of-its-kind online learning platform that is dedicated to Indology, South Asian, and Oriental studies, related to art, architecture, language, philosophy, etc.
• It is designed and developed by the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (BORI) and will offer six courses: Veda Vidya, Bharatiya Darshanshastra, Fundamentals of Archaeology, Sanskrit Learning, 18 Parvas of Mahabharata, Works of Kalidasa and Bhasha.
• BORI was established in 1917 in Pune, Maharashtra, and is known as one of the largest collectors of manuscripts in Sanskrit and Prakrit languages, and rare books.
• Many courses have been designed on the lines of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. 
• BORI has collaborated with a few Indian and foreign universities for awarding credits for some of its courses.

• India’s latest population sample registration survey has shown improvements in child mortality and the average sex ratio at birth.
• India’s average neonatal mortality (deaths within 30 days of birth) declined to 20 per 1,000 live births in 2020 from 22 in 2019 and 26 in 2014.
• Infant mortality (deaths within the first year after birth) fell to 28 in 2020 from 30 in 2019 and 39 in 2014, while under-five mortality declined to 32 in 2020 from 35 in 2019 and 45 in 2014.
• Six states have attained the SDG target of 12 for neonatal mortality — Kerala (4), Delhi (9), Tamil Nadu (9), Maharashtra (11), Jammu and Kashmir (12) and Punjab (12).
• The national sex ratio at birth — the number of girls born per 1,000 boys — improved by three points from an average 904 in 2017-19 to 907 in (the partly overlapping period of) 2018-20.
• Kerala has the highest sex ratio of 974 while Uttarakhand has the lowest at 844. In Bengal, the ratio has fallen from 944 to 936.

• Britain’s Indian-origin Home Secretary Suella Braverman has been named winner of the first-ever Queen Elizabeth II Woman of the Year award at a ceremony in London.
• The 42-year-old barrister, who was appointed to the Cabinet earlier this month by British Prime Minister Liz Truss, said it was the "honour of her life" to take on the new role at the Asian Achievers Awards (AAA) 2022 ceremony.
• Braverman was previously served as attorney General between 2020-2022.
• These awards were established in 2000 to honour south Asians for their great achievement in UK.

• Olympian and Asian Games medalist Dilip Tirkey has been elected unopposed as the president of Hockey India, the governing body of the sport in the country.
• Dilip Tirkey is one of the most decorated hockey players in the country with as many as 412 caps. 
• The 44-year-old, who led India men's hockey team in the past, was part of the Olympics teams in 1996, 2000 and 2004. 
• He also was part of the Asia Cup-winning teams in 2003 and 2007.
• Meanwhile, Bola Nath Singh was appointed as the Secretary-General of Hockey India.

• Dr. Rajiv Bahl, who currently is with the World Health Organisation has been appointed as Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Secretary of the Department of Health Research for a period of three years.
• Bahl is currently the Head of Research on Maternal, Newborn Child and Adolescent Health-cum-Newborn Unit Head, Department of Maternal Newborn Child and Adolescent Health and Ageing, at the WHO in Geneva.
• His predecessor, Dr Balram Bhargava’s extended tenure as Director General of ICMR and Secretary of the Department of Health Research ended in July.
• Dr Bahl is a paediatrician by training and studied public health as well before joining the WHO in 2003.

• Dr. M Srinivas on Friday has been appointed as the next director of All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. 
• Dr. Srinivas will replace Dr. Randeep Guleria whose tenure as the head of the country’s premier health institute.
• Dr. Guleria had twice received an extension for three months for the post of AIIMS director. 
• He joined the role on March 28, 2017.
• Dr. Srinivas was a professor in the Department of Pediatric Surgery at AIIMS-Delhi before he joined the ESIC Hospital and Medical College in Hyderabad in 2016. 
• He was currently posted as the dean at the ESIC hospital in Hyderabad.

• The Supreme Court appointed former apex court judge Justice L Nageswara Rao to amend the constitution of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and prepare the Electoral College for elections to the sporting body.
• The court asked Justice Rao to prepare a road map for amending the constitution and holding elections by December 15, 2022.
• Justice Rao will come up with a series of recommendations for the amendment of the constitution and help the body to hold its election by 15 December 2022.
• A bench headed by Justice D Y Chandrachud said that Justice Rao will ensure a fair and development-oriented approach for the future of the Olympics in India.

• World Bank has approved a USD 350 million or over ₹2,832 crore loan to Gujarat for augmenting health services with a special focus on adolescent girls and disease surveillance in the state.
• The funding will come from the World Bank arm International Bank of Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), carrying a maturity of 18 years including a grace period of 5.5 years.
• Currently, Gujarat provides seven health services to its citizens including reproductive, maternal, and newborn, child and adolescent health, communicable and non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
• The loan will be utilised through the state government's Systems Reform Endeavours for Transformed Health Achievement in Gujarat (SRESTHA-G) Programme.

• Senior sports administrator Anil Khanna on Wednesday resigned as acting president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), saying he respects the views of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
• Khanna took charge of IOA after a court ruling ended Narinder Batra's reign as chief of the apex sports body in the country.
• He is a former Head of the All India Tennis Association (AITA).

• The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully tested a hybrid motor, potentially paving the way for a new propulsion system for the forthcoming launch vehicles.
• The test was conducted at ISRO Propulsion Complex (IPRC) at Mahendragiri in Tamil Nadu supported by Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC).
• The use of liquids helps throttling and the control over the flow rate of LOX enables the re-start capability.
• The 30 kN hybrid motor tested at ISRO Propulsion Complex (IPRC) at Mahendragiri in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday is scalable and stackable.
• The test was supported by ISRO's Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC). The motor used Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) as fuel and liquid oxygen (LOX) as the oxidiser.

• Retired Gujarat cadre officer Bharat Lal has been appointed as the Director General, National Centre for Good Governance (NCGG).
• Bharat Lal, a 1988-batch Indian Forest officer of Gujarat cadre, had served as Gujarat government's resident commissioner in Delhi and has been known to be close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the then chief minister of the state.
• Earlier, during December 2021, Lal was appointed as the Secretary to the Lokpal.

• India is set to host its maiden MotoGP World Championships race at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida in 2023. 
• MotoGP commercial rights owner Dorna and Noida-based race promoters Fairstreet Sports signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to host the premier two-wheel racing event in India for the next seven years. 
• Riders from as many as 19 countries will participate in the event, which will give a push to trade and tourism in the country, besides generating employment.
• MotoGP also has plans to also introduce MotoE into the Indian racing scenario, which will not only be a first in Asia but a significant green initiative with net zero carbon emission.
• The Buddh International Circuit was once home to the Formula 1 Indian Grand Prix, held for three consecutive years from 2011 till 2013, before it was discontinued due to financial, tax and bureaucratic hurdles.

• Tamil Nadu on Wednesday notified the country’s first ‘Dugong Conservation Reserve’ in Palk Bay covering the coastal waters of Thanjavur and Pudukottai districts with an area of 448 square kilometers.
• Dugongs are the largest herbivorous marine mammals in the world thriving primarily on seagrass beds, a major carbon sink of the oceans.
• Dugongs are protected under Schedule 1 of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. However, their population is on the decline due to habitat loss.
• There are only about 240 individuals estimated to be present in the country and the majority is found in Tamil Nadu coast (Palk Bay).

• India's longest river cruise service will be launched early next year between Varanasi and Bogibeel.
• Two floating jetties are being constructed at Dibrugarh’s Bogibeel and Guijan in Tinsukia district.
• The cruise service will be traversing a distance of more than 4000 kms across Ganga, Indo Bangladesh Protocol Route (IBPR), and Brahmaputra.
• The cruise would be the latest in a string of connectivity and development projects in the northeast. 
• National Waterways on the Ganges, the Brahmaputra and Barak rivers are also being developed to reduce travel costs to Bangladesh.

• American e-commerce giant Amazon has announced that it will set up three solar farms in Rajasthan with a combined capacity of 420 megawatt (MW). This will be the first time that Amazon is setting up a solar farm in the country.
• The power plant will be developed by three companies .ReNew Power will develop 210 MW plant,  Amp Energy India will set up 100 Mw and Brookfield Renewable Partners will develop  110 MW power plant .
• Amazon will also set up 23 new solar rooftop projects in 14 cities of India, with a capacity to generate an additional 4.09 MW of power.

• ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund has launched India’s first Auto Index Fund namely ICICI Prudential Nifty Auto Index Fund.
• The offering is an open-ended index scheme replicating Nifty Auto Index.
• The new fund offer opens on 22 September and will close on 6 October.
• The fund will track the Nifty Auto Index which has been designed to reflect the performance of the automobiles sector.

• The Telangana government announced naming the newly-built state secretariat complex after Dr B R Ambedkar.
• Tweeting from its official Twitter handle, the Telangana government has written that 'Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao has decided to name the new Telangana Secretariat, which is under construction after the world renowned intellectual, chief architect of the Indian Constitution, Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar.
• With the incorporation of Article 3 in the Constitution by Dr Ambedkar, the Telangana has been formed as a separate state.

• Czech Republic’s 17-year-old, Linda Fruhvirtova scripted a brilliant comeback to win the Chennai Open 2022 WTA 250 tennis singles. The teenager beat Magda Linette of Poland, the third seed, in the final.

• The Railway Protection Force (RPF) celebrated its 38th Raising Day on 20th September 2022 by organizing a parade for the first time at the central level at Jag Jeewan Ram RPF Academy, Lucknow. 
• This is the first time that a National Level Parade of RPF was organized outside New Delhi.
• The Railway Protection Force was constituted by an Act of Parliament in 1957 for providing security to Railway property. Subsequently, the force was empowered to enquire, arrest and prosecute the offenders involved in unlawful possession of railway property in 1966.
• Over the years, it was felt that the force needed to be given the status of “An Armed Force of the Union" and finally the status was bestowed upon the force on 20th September 1985 by amending the RPF Act by the Parliament. As a result, 20th September is celebrated every year as the Raising Day of RPF by members of the force and their families.

• Ace Assam swimmer, Elvis Ali Hazarika, became the third oldest Indian and the first from the Northeast to cross the North Channel, a strait linking the Irish Sea with the North Atlantic Ocean.
• Hazarika who hails from Guwahati is known for his swimming records and this time he has made another record making the people of Assam proud.
• Hazarika has set another record by becoming the first Assamese to successfully swim from Dharamtar Jetty to the Gateway of India, Mumbai, the Arabian Sea in 2021.
• Also, Hazarika has become the first from the state to cross the Catalina channel in the United State of America (USA) in 2019.
• Elvis Ali Hazarika, reached Mexico from the USA, swimming through the channel and covering a distance of 80 km in a span of 10 hours 59 minutes.

• The Centre on Wednesday appointed Tata Sons chairman emeritus Ratan Tata and two others as the trustees of the PM CARES Fund. 
• Two other members are former Supreme Court judge KT Thomas and former Deputy Speaker Kariya Munda. 
• The government also decided to nominate three eminent persons for the constitution of the advisory board to the PM CARES Fund. 
• Among those nominated for the board are former CAG Rajiv Mehrishi, former Infosys Foundation chairperson Sudha Murthy, and Anand Shah, former CEO of Indicorps and Piramal Foundation.
• The decision was announced a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the Board of Trustees of the PM CARES Fund.
• PM CARES, a public charitable trust, was set up keeping in mind the need for having a dedicated fund with the primary objective of dealing with any kind of emergency or distress situation and providing relief to the affected. 
• The Prime Minister is the ex-officio chairman of the PM CARES Fund.

• The Asian Development Bank (ADB) lowered India's GDP growth projection for the year 2022-23 to 7 per cent from the earlier 7.2 per cent based on higher-than-expected inflation and monetary tightening.
• ADO report released on Wednesday, it was mentioned that the Indian economy recorded a 13.5 per cent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2022-23.
• Fitch ratings also slashed India's growth forecast for 2022-23 to 7 per cent from previous estimates of 7.8 per cent.
• Moody's Investors Service slashed India's GDP growth projection from 8.3% in 2021 to 7.7% in 2022 and projected it to decelerate further to 5.2% in 2023.

• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor, Shaktikanta Das, launched three key digital payment initiatives at the Global Fintech Fest 2022.
• The three digital payment initiatives that were launched by the RBI are RuPay Credit Card on Unified Payments Interface (UPI), UPI Lite, and Bharat BillPay Cross-Border Bill Payments.
• Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das launched the Rupay credit card on Unified Payments Interface (UPI) network. 
• The move is likely to expand the credit market multi-fold.
• Up until now, only debit cards were allowed to be linked with UPI.
• Customers of Punjab National Bank, Union Bank of India, and Indian Bank will be the first to be able to use RuPay Credit Card on UPI with BHIM App.
• The RuPay credit card linked with UPI will improve penetration in rural and semi-urban areas.

• Two Large Diving Support Vessels (DSVs), which will also assist in rescue operations of disabled submarines, have been "launched" at the Hindustan Shipyard in Visakhapatnam.
• The first of the two DSVs (Nistar and Nipun), each with a displacement of 9,350 tonnes, is likely to be delivered to the Navy by July 2023.
• They are the first of their kind ships to be indigenously designed and built for the Navy. The vessels, which are 118.4 metres long and 22.8 metres wide, will be deployed for deep sea diving operations.

• India has won a UN award for its initiative to control and prevent hypertension under the government's National Health Mission.  
• The India Hypertension Control Initiative (IHCI) has been recognized for its exceptional work within the country's existing primary healthcare system.

• Hypertension or uncontrolled blood pressure is one of the risk factors for cardiovascular-related diseases such as stroke, heart attack, etc. Cardiovascular deaths are responsible for one-third of the total deaths in India.

• Cosmonaut Valery Vladimirovich Polyakov, who holds the record for the longest spaceflight, has died at the age of 80.
• According to Roscosmos, Polyakov has participated in two space missions during his career with a total duration of 678 days and 16 hours.
• Polyakov took part in his first mission to space in 1988, and returned eight months later in 1989. That year, he was appointed deputy director of the Institute of Biomedical Problems.
• Valery Polyakov spent a full 437 days orbiting the Earth on the Mir space station between 1994 and 1995.
• Polyakov had previously spent 288 days in space on a mission in 1988-89.
• He worked on experiments to see if people could maintain their mental health to make the long journey to Mars.
• The Mir space station was put into orbit in 1986, first under the control of the Soviet Union and later by Russia.

• A wild Arctic wolf was successfully cloned for the first time in the world by a Beijing-based gene firm. 
• The cloning of the Arctic wolf, also known as the white wolf or polar wolf.
• The firm, Sinogene Biotechnology, released a video of Maya, the world's first cloned wild arctic wolf, 100 days after her birth in a Beijing lab.
• The cloning of the arctic wolf was accomplished by constructing over 130 new embryos from enucleated oocytes of a female dog and somatic cells of a wild female arctic wolf. 
• This was followed by the transfer of over 80 embryos to the uteri of seven beagles, of which one was born as a healthy wolf.

• The RBI has approved the appointment of its Former Deputy Governor, Rama Subramaniam Gandhi, as Non-Executive (Part-Time) Chairman of Yes Bank for three years. 
• Gandhi had a three-year secondment to the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). 
• He is a financial sector policy advisor who worked with investors and fintech companies.
• He was also the Deputy Governor of RBI for three years from 2014 to 2017.

• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) removed Central Bank of India from its Prompt Corrective Action Framework (PCAF) after the lender showed improvement in various financial ratios, including minimum regulatory capital and net non-performing assets (NNPAs). 
• The RBI had imposed the PCA norms on the bank in June 2017 due to its high net NPA and negative return of assets (RoA). 
• After reviewing the performance of the Central Bank of India, RBI decided to remove the restrictions on the bank.
• RBI initiated the Scheme of Prompt Corrective Action (PCA) in 2002.
• In early 2018, there were 12 banks under PCA framework. Of these, 11 were PSBs.

• In Ladakh, Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pandey inaugurated the Kargil International Marathon in September 2022.
• It was inaugurated with by flagging off a 42 Km Full Marathon.
• Over 2000 runners took part in the Full (10 Km) and Half (5 Km) run in the marathon organized by Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council Kargil, Ladakh Police in collaboration with Sarhad Pune.
• Meanwhile, the start and finish point of all races was the Khree Sultan Cho Sports Stadium Biamathang where participants were appreciated for showing their performance in the marathon and were felicitated with medals and certificates.

• The Film Federation of India has announced India's official entry to the Oscars 2023. 
• The Gujarati film, Chhello Show, which is titled Last Film Show in English, has been selected as India's official entry to the 95th Academy Awards. 
• It has been selected in the Best International Feature Film category.
• The coming-of-age film has been directed by Pan Nalin.
• Last Film Show (Chhello Show) had its world premiere as the opening film at Robert DeNiro’s Tribeca Film Festival and has won multiple awards across various international film festivals, including the Golden Spike at the 66th Valladolid Film Festival in Spain, where it also enjoyed commercial success during its theatrical run. 
• Chhello Show will release in theatres on October 14 in India.

• Two bilateral hand transplants have been performed successfully on two patients at the Amrita Hospital in Kochi. 
• A patient from Karnataka, Amaresh, 25, and another from Iraq, Yousif Hasan Saeed Al Zuwaini, 29 who lost both their hands due to electric shock underwent transplantation with limbs harvested from donors who were victims of fatal road accidents in Kerala.
• A team led by Dr Subramania Iyer and Dr Mohit Sharma, comprising 20 surgeons and 10 anaesthetists, performed the surgery.
• Only three shoulder-level full-arm transplants have been performed in the world, and this is the first in India.

• Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a decree, officially changing the name of the capital Nur Sultan to Astana.
• The capital's name was changed to Nur-Sultan in March 2019, in honor of outgoing President Nursultan Nazarbayev.
• Astana became the capital of Kazakhstan in 1997 when Nazarbayev, who led the country for three decades under the Soviet Union and after it gained independence in 1991, moved it there from Almaty.
• After he stepped down in 2019, his successor, Tokayev, moved to name it Nur-Sultan — in honor of Nazarbayev, who retained enormous influence as head of the county's ruling party and Security Council.

• The UAE's Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), on September 16, announced its collaboration with China's space agency to land a rover on the Moon in future lunar missions.
• The agreement marks the first joint space project between the two countries.
• The UAE has been proactive in its space push. In 2020, it launched the Emirates Mars Mission, under which an orbiter named Hope was sent to Mars
• Currently, the UAE is working on launching a rover to the Moon later this year under the Emirates Lunar Mission in a lander developed by a Japanese company named ispace.
• Named Rashid, the robotic rover weighing 10 kg will be carried to the Moon inside the HAKUTO-R after being launched atop SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket.

• The President has appointed Justice T Raja, senior-most Judge of the Madras High Court as Acting Chief Justice with effect from September 22, 2022 consequent to the superannuation of Justice M Duraiswamy, who is the current Acting Chief Justice of Madras High Court.
• He served as Standing Counsel for Dr M.G.R. Medical University for about 10 years in the Supreme Court. 
• He also served as Standing Counsel for E.S.I, before the Principal Bench, Central Administrative Tribunal, New Delhi as well as in Delhi High Court and in Supreme Court.
• He was appointed as an Additional Advocate General at Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on February 9, 2008, and appeared in several important cases. 
• He was appointed as Additional Judge of Madras High Court on March 31, 2009.

• In Manipur, a web portal to receive complaints and grievances from the general public was launched today by Chief Minister N. Biren Singh at Imphal.
• The name of the web portal is ‘CM Da Haisi’ (English translation- Inform to CM) and the public can raise their grievances in the web portal by logging on to www.cmdahaisi.mn.gov.in. The complainants can also check the status of their complaints.
• The prime objective of this campaign is to improve citizens' participation and engagement by providing a platform.
• "CM DA HAISI" aims to reach at least 50 per cent of households of Manipur in the next two months.

• Bangladesh pacer Rubel Hossain announced his retirement from Test cricket.
• Hossain made his Test format debut in 2009 and represented Bangladesh in 27 Tests over the span of 13 years. 
• The pacer scalped 36 wickets in his Test career with the best figure of 5/166 - his one and only five-wicket haul.
• Few weeks ago, Mushfiqur Rahim had announced his retirement from the T20I format after a poor outing in the Asia Cup 2022.

• Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has declared Andaman and Nicobar Islands as India's first Swachh Sujal Pradesh.
• Now, all villages of Andaman and Nicobar Island have been certified as Har Ghar Jal and verified as open defecation free - ODF plus.
• Safe and secure drinking water supply and its management is a crucial aspect of the Sujal and Swachh.
• Andaman and Nicobar Island which is remotely located from the mainland has become a source of inspiration for the rest of the states and Union Territories of India.
• On World Water Day, 22 March 2021, Andaman and Nicobar Islands were declared to have achieved 100% coverage of rural households with tap water connection. It became the third State/UT in the country to achieve 100% coverage of rural households with tap water supply after Goa and Telangana.

• The Indian Army activated satellite-based internet service on the world’s highest battlefield on Siachen Glacier.
• Satellite-based internet service has been activated on the Siachen Glacier at 19,061 feet, the world’s highest battlefield, by the Siachen Signallers.
• Bharat Broadband Network Limited (BBNL), a government of India undertaking that is providing the net connectivity to the Army at Siachen, is the same agency that is responsible for the implementation of BharatNet Project. 
• The BBNL's plan is to provide satellite-based internet to around 7,000 gram panchayats and other remote areas where fibre-based internet connectivity is not possible.

• Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineering Limited (GRSE), Kolkata, has been awarded with the ‘Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar’ by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. 
• GRSE is the only Defence, and public sector undertaking in Kolkata which has been honoured with this award.
• The ‘Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar’ was given to Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Kumar Mishra.
• GRSE received the ‘Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar’ for the best official language Implementation during 2011-2012, 2012-2013, 2014-2015, 2015-2016, and 2016-2017.
• The ‘Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar’ is the highest award and is presented by the Indian Govt in the field of official Language Implementation.

• INS Ajay was decommissioned after 32 years of glorious service on September 19, 2022. The ceremony was conducted in a traditional manner at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai.
• INS Ajay was a part of the 23rd Patrol Vessel Squadron. 
• It was commissioned on January 24, 1990, at Poti, Georgia in the erstwhile USSR. 
• The ship was under the operational control of Flag Officer Commanding, Maharashtra Naval Area.
• For more than 32 years, INS Ajay was in active naval service.
• India’s 1st Indigenous Aircraft Carrier INS Vikrant was commissioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 2, 2022, at Cochin Shipyard in Kochi.

• Typhoon Nanmadol bore down on Japan's southernmost main island of Kyushu with the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warning of gales and high waves "like never experienced before".
• Kyushu is the southernmost of the four islands that make up the main body of Japan and has a population of more than 13 million people.
• The 14th typhoon of the season, classified as a super typhoon by the U.S. Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center.
• Typhoon Nanmadol has brought winds of at least 180 km/h (112mph) and some areas could see 500mm (20 inches) of rainfall.

• The government has appointed Thomas M Devasia - a senior executive from the private sector as member (non-life) in the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI).
• Thomas M Devasia is currently technical expert at Marsh Insurance Brokers India working in Kochi, Kerala, according to a government notification.
• The appointment is first of its kind from the private sector and is a departure from the set tradition of hiring people from public sector insurance companies as members.
• IRDAI, is a statutory body formed under an Act of Parliament, Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority Act, 1999 (IRDAI Act 1999), for overall supervision and development of the Insurance sector in India.

• Auto industry body, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has elected Vinod Aggarwal as its new president for 2022-23. 
• Aggarwal, the MD and CEO of Volvo Eicher Commercial Vehicles, succeeds Kenichi Ayukawa, the executive vice-chairman of Maruti Suzuki India. 
• The SIAM also elected Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles managing director Shailesh Chandra as the vice-president, Satyakam Arya; and CEO & MD of Daimler India Commercial Vehicles was elected as the treasurer.
• The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) is a not-for-profit apex national body representing all major vehicle and vehicular engine manufacturers in India.

• The Tamil Nadu government has notified the Nanjarayan tank in Tiruppur district as the 17th bird sanctuary of the State.
• The tank, locally called Sarkar Periyapalayam tank, lies at the junction of Tiruppur North and Uthukuli taluks, covering 125.86 hectares.
• This is the second bird sanctuary in the western part of Tamil Nadu after Vellode bird sanctuary.
• The tank is considered an abode of migratory bird species. Bar-headed goose, ruddy shelduck, northern shoveler and many other species native to Central Asia are expected to arrive at the tank by October.

• Commonwealth and Asian Games gold medallist and Olympic bronze winner Bajrang Punia has won the bronze medal in the men’s 65kg on the final day of the World Wrestling Championships 2022.
• He has defeated Puerto Rico's Sebastian Rivera.
• Ace grappler Bajrang Punia became the only Indian to claim four medals at the World Wrestling Championships by clinching a bronze in the current edition.
• It was his third bronze medal, in addition to a silver.
• In this edition, India won two bronze medals, one of which was won by Vinesh Phogat.

• Bengaluru FC and their talismanic captain Sunil Chhetri won their maiden Durand Cup football tournament title after beating Mumbai City FC 2-1 in the summit clash at the Salt Lake Stadium.
• This is seventh domestic title for Bengaluru FC
• Siva Sakthi (10th minute) and Brazilian Alan Costa (61st) scored for the winners while Apuia got the lone goal for the Mumbai side in an entertaining match.
• Both the teams were at one each at the end of first half. But the goal by Alan Costa in 61st minute gave Bengaluru FC the winning lead against Mumbai.

• Indian javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia has clinched a silver medal in the World Para Athletics Grand Prix, in Morocco. 
• Paralympics gold medalist Devendra threw the javelin to a distance of 60.97 meter to capture the silver.
• India’s Ajit Kumar won the gold by achieving the best throw of 64 m.
• Devendra is a three-time Paralympics medalist.
• In the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo, he won a silver medal for his nation.

• Ultratech Cement is the largest player with a market valuation of over Rs 1.87 lakh crore.

• Gautam Adani on Friday briefly overtook Amazon’s Jeff Bezos to become the world’s second-richest person, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
• Adani’s net worth touched $155 billion (over Rs 12.3 lakh crore) and was trailing after Tesla founder Elon Musk, who has a net worth of $264 billion (over Rs 21.4 lakh crore), according to Bloomberg.

• Saudi Arabia emerged as the second-biggest oil supplier to India after a three-month gap, overtaking Russia by a thin margin, while Iraq retained the top spot in August, data from industry and trade sources showed.
• India, the world's third biggest oil importer and consumer, shipped in 8,63,950 barrels per day (bpd) of crude from Saudi Arabia, up 4.8% from the previous month, while purchases from Russia fell 2.4% to 8,55,950 bpd, the data showed.
• In August, the United Arab Emirates stayed at No. 4 while Kazakhstan replaced Kuwait to become fifth-largest oil supplier to India, followed by the United States.
• India has become Russia's No. 2 oil buyer after China as others have cut purchases following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in late February.

• Prominent Indian scientist and industrialist Dr Swati Piramal has been conferred France's top civilian honour for her contributions in the fields of business and industry, science, medicine, and towards strengthening Indo-French ties.
• She has been conferred the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur (Knight of the Legion of Honour).
• Swati Piramal, 66, is the vice-chairperson of the Mumbai-headquartered Piramal Group, a business conglomerate with interests in pharmaceuticals, financial services, real estate and glass packaging.
• In 2006, she was also awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite (Knight of the Order of Merit), France’s second highest civilian honour.”
• Created in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, the Legion of Honour is the highest civilian award given by the French Republic for outstanding service to France, regardless of the nationality of the recipients.

• CSB Bank Limited announced the appointment of Pralay Mondal as the managing director and chief executive officer of the bank for a period of three years starting 15 September.
• Mondal joined CSB Bank as president, retail, SME, operations and IT on 23 September, 2020 and was appointed as the deputy MD with effect from 17 February. 
• He was the interim MD and CEO of the bank with effect from 1 April till date in the absence of a regular CEO and MD.

• 25-year-old Ugandan climate activist Vanessa Nakate has been appointed as the newest UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
• Inspired by Sweden's Greta Thunberg, Nakate began her climate action in 2019 and has since founded the Rise Up Movement and addressed global climate summits.
• In 2020 she came to further global prominence when she was cropped out of a news photo she appeared in alongside Thunberg and other white climate activists.

• The introduction of wild cheetahs from Namibia is part of PM Modi's efforts to revive and diversify India's wildlife and its habitat.
• Cheetahs were declared extinct from India in 1952 and those that have been introduced are from Namibia and have been brought under a memorandum of understanding signed earlier this year.

• The female camel riding squad participated for the first time in the BSF Raising Day Parade on 1st December. This Squad is the first of its kind in the world.
• Border Security Force (BSF) will soon deploy its first female camel riding squad along the India-Pakistan border in Rajasthan and Gujarat.
• The BSF is the only force in the country to have the Camel Contingents and the Camel Mounted Band.

• Japan-India Maritime Exercise 2022 (JIMEX 22), hosted by the Indian Navy, began in the Bay of Bengal.
• JIMEX, which started in Japan in 2012, is celebrating its 10th anniversary with this edition.
• The Japan Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF) ships are being led by Rear Admiral Hirata Toshiyuki, Commander Escort Flotilla Four, and Indian naval ships by Rear Admiral Sanjay Bhalla, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet.
• The Indian Navy is being represented by three indigenously designed and built warships; Sahyadri, a multi-purpose stealth frigate and Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvettes Kadmatt and Kavaratti. 
• JIMEX 22 involves two phases - exercises at sea and a harbour phase at Visakhapatnam. 
• It also marks 70 years of ties between India and Japan. 

• Former Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf, who was a part of the ICC Elite Panel from 2006 to 2013, died after suffering a cardiac arrest in Lahore. He was 66.
• Rauf umpired his first ODI in 2000 and his first Test in 2005. In 2006, he was named in ICC's Elite Panel, which he was a part of until 2013. 
• Rauf played 71 First Class matches, scoring 3423 runs. He played 40 List A matches, scoring 611 runs.

• Former Dutch field hockey player and former Indian Women’s Hockey Coach, Sjoerd Marijne, authored a new book titled “Will Power: The Inside Story of the Incredible Turnaround in Indian Women’s Hockey”.
• He was appointed the chief coach of the Indian Women’s Hockey Team in 2017 and later, he was given charge of the Men’s Hockey Team in September 2017.
• In May 2018, he was again appointed as the Coach of the Women’s Hockey and he guided the team to a fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

• The registrations for the Raktdaan Amrit Mahotsav have begun on the E-Raktkosh portal and Aarogya Setu app.

• Investment of Rs 40,361 crore was made in AP, according to a report by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).

• The city of 160,000 people near Amsterdam has agreed to outlaw ads for intensively farmed meat on public places like buses, shelters and screens from 2024.

• Hughes Communications India (HCI) in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) launched its first high throughput satellite (HTS) broadband internet service in the country.
• The company had been testing its operation in North India for the last year.
• From northeast to desolate parts of Leh and Ladakh, the company, using ISRO's Ku-band capacity of GSAT-11 and GSAT-29 satellites has promised to deliver high-speed satellite broadband services to remote locations across India.

• American Express Banking Corp (AEBC) on Monday announced the appointment of Sanjay Khanna as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Country Manager of AEBC Corp India.
• Khanna, at present, heads the country executive team and is responsible for driving growth across the organisation’s consumer and commercial businesses.
• Khanna has spent about 27 years with American Express, joining as manager of finance in 1996.

• In a first of its kind in Nagaland, Naga Mircha (Naga King Chilli) Festival 2022 has been organised at Seiyhama Village under Kohima district. 
• The festival was sponsored by the Department of Horticulture.
• Considered as the world’s hottest chilli – Naga Mircha (King Chilli) has constantly been placed on the top five in the list of the world’s hottest chilies based on the SHUs. 
• Also referred as ‘Raja Mircha’, ‘Bhoot Jolokia’ or ‘Ghost Pepper’, this chilli attained Geographical Indication (GI) certification in 2008. It belongs to genus Capsicum of family Solanaceae.
• Naga Chilli’ or ‘Raja Mircha’ is an indigenous crop of Nagaland believed to have originated from Nagaland’s Zeliangrong region; and is extensively grown in Peren, Mon, Kohima and Dimapur.

• Two-time Olympic champions Fiji won the 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens men's crown in Cape Town, South Africa, on Sunday (11 September), as Australia picked up the women's title.
• Fiji won their third men's title with a 29-12 win. Fiji has won this title after 17 years.
• Since the World Cup began in 1993, Fiji took home the title in 1997 and 2005.
• The Australia women’s squad also defeated New Zealand 24-22 in an extremely tense affair to take home the World Cup title in the women’s tournament.
• It marked Australia’s second title win in the World Cup since the women’s tournaments started in 2009. New Zealand were victorious in the other two in 2013 and 2018.

• Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikandar Raza scripted history, becoming the first player from his country to win the ICC Men's Player of the Month award for August.
• Sikandar Raza defeated England star all-rounder Ben Stokes and New Zealand's Mitchell Santner to claim the honours with his three ODI centuries during the month.
• Australia all-rounder Tahlia McGrath has been named as the ICC Women's Player of the Month for August for her performance during the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
• McGrath defeated compatriot Beth Mooney and India's top-order batter Jemimah Rodrigues to clinch the monthly award after helping her side Australia win the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the International Dairy Federation World Dairy Summit (IDF WDS) 2022 at India Expo Centre and Mart in Greater Noida.
• The four-day long summit is a congregation of global and Indian dairy stakeholders including industry leaders, experts, farmers and policy planners centring around the theme of ‘Dairy for Nutrition and Livelihood’.
• The last such Summit was held in India about half a century ago in 1974.
• The Indian dairy industry is unique in that it is based on a cooperative model that empowers small and marginalized dairy farmers, especially women.
• The International Dairy Agreement (IDA) changed the International Dairy Arrangement, which were set up in 1980.
• The inaugural function was also attended by the minister of fisheries, animal husbandry and dairying Parshottam Rupala and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath.

• Kibithu military garrison, a key military station guarding the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh has been named after India’s first Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat.
• Gen Bipin Rawat was killed in a chopper crash near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu in December last year along with his wife and 12 other Army and IAF personnel.
• The reason for choosing this military base for the renaming is clear as Gen Rawat had made a significant contribution to strengthening the security structure of the remote Kibithu area when he commanded his Battalion 5/11 Gorkha Rifles as a Colonel from 1999-2000.
• Along with the renaming of the military camp, the 22km Kibithu-Wallong Road, was also renamed General Bipin Rawat Road.
• Kibithu, a small hamlet in the eastern most part of India, is a strategically located military camp guarding the LAC.

• Army’s Kharga Corps and the Indian Air Force conducted a joint exercise to showcase the might and prowess of the armed forces.
• Termed “Gagan Strike”, the exercise was conducted over a period of four days in several areas of Punjab, bordering Ambala in Haryana.
• The joint exercise was spearheaded by General Officer Commanding, Kharga Corps, Lt. Gen Pratik Sharma. 
• The exercise was also attended by Lt Gen Nav K Khanduri, General Officer Commanding in Chief, Western Command, who exhorted the forces to continue to evolve such concepts and remain prepared to counter any contingency on the western borders.

• Volker Turk of Austria has been appointed as the next United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.  United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed Turk following approval by the General Assembly.
• Turk will succeed Michelle Bachelet of Chile.
• Turk is currently coordinating global policy work as the under-secretary-general for policy in the executive office of the secretary-general.
• Previously, he was the Assistant High Commissioner for Protection at UN refugees, UNHCR, in Geneva where he played a key role in the development of the landmark Global Compact on Refugees.

• SpiceJet has named Ashish Kumar as its Chief Financial Officer.
• Kumar, who has over 26 years of experience in a variety of industries, joined SpiceJet in January 2019 from Interglobe Enterprises, where he served as VP (Head) of Corporate Finance. 
• Prior to this, from 2014 to 2018, he worked as Interglobe Hotels' Chief Financial Officer for five years.
• He has also worked at Reliance Infrastructure and Hindustan Petroleum.

• She is also the first woman in history to win three Olympic medals in the javelin.
• Spotakova, who set the world record of 72.28 metres in 2008. The world record is also the longest-standing in the women’s javelin. 
• She had won gold at the world championships in 2007, 2011 and 2017 and silver in 2009.

• In the US Open Tennis, World number one Iga Swiatek has won the women’s singles final. She defeated Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur 6-2, 7-6 in the summit clash in New York.
• Swiatek is the first Polish woman to win the US Open. 
• It is her 10th career title and third grand slam.
• In mixed doubles, Storm Sanders and John Peers defeated Kirsten Flipkens and Edouard Roger-Vasselin, 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 to win the title. They are also the first Australian duo in 21 years to win the US Open mixed doubles title.
• With her victory, Swiatek has become the first woman to win two grand slam titles in a year since Angelique Kerber in 2016, after winning the French Open earlier in the season.

• In exercise of the powers conferred by Sub-Clause (a), of clause (1) of article 80 of the Constitution of India, read with clause (3) of that article, the President is pleased to nominate Shri Gulam Ali to the Council of the state to fill the vacancy caused due to the retirement of one of the nominated members.

• Former India Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Sunil Lanba has been conferred Singapore’s prestigious military award, the Pingat Jasa Gemilang (Tentera) or Meritorious Service Medal (Military) (MSM(M)), by President Halimah Yacob.
• Admiral Lanba has been conferred the award for his outstanding contributions in enhancing the strong and long-standing bilateral defence relationship between the Indian Navy and the Republic of Singapore Navy.

• Taragiri, the indigenously-designed Nilgiri-class stealth guided-missile frigate constructed by Mazgaon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), has been launched in Mumbai.
• Taragiri is the third stealth frigate built as part of Project 17A under which a series of such guided-missile frigates are being constructed for the Navy.
• The ship is designed by the Indian Navy’s in-house design organisation, the Bureau of Naval Design.
• The 149-metre-long and 17.8-metre-wide ship is propelled by a combination of two gas turbines and two main diesel engines which are designed to achieve a speed of more than 28 knots at a displacement of as much as 6,670 tonnes.
• The first ship of Project 17A, Nilgiri, was launched on September 28, 2019 and is expected to undergo sea trials in the first half of 2024. 
• The second ship of P17A class, Udaygiri, was launched on May 17 this year and is expected to start sea trials in the second half of 2024.
• The total value of Project 17A is around Rs 25,700 crore.

• Union Home Minister Amit Shah flagged off the Fit India Freedom Moto Ride at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi on Friday morning. 
•  It is a pan-India Bike Ride by 75 bikers to 75 iconic locations.
• Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Nisith Pramanik, Minister of State for External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi and Members of Parliament were present at the event among others.

• The Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly on Thursday unanimously adopted the Transplantation of Human Organ Act 1994 (Amendment Act 2011), aiming to create a suitable infrastructure for organ donation in the state.
• The act was adopted through a government resolution passed by the vote and assent given by all the legislatures attending the last day of the Arunachal Pradesh legislative assembly session.
• The government resolution was moved by the State Health and Family Welfare Minister of Arunachal Alo Libang.

• Hayden expressed confidence that Pakistan team, with its set of strong players, will light up the mega event, set to unfold next month.
• Hayden will join the side in Brisbane on October 15, the day Pakistan arrive from Christchurch after competing in the T20I series. 

• Mumbai citizens will be able to book their tickets well in advance on the 15 airport bus services operated by the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) on the three prominent routes of the city.
• BEST has decided to start an advance ticket reservation system for its airport bus service through the Chalo App. 
• Airport bus services were launched by the BEST last year.

• While the process has been finalised in 69 districts, it will take another week or so for the council to take shape in remaining districts.
• The idea behind the initiative is to stir local economies with tourism potential, and also stimulate tourists, pilgrims and investors in unexplored and untapped hotspots. 
• The council, to be headed by district magistrate of the respective district, will have district tourism officer, regional tourism officer and officers of the concerned department as its members.

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Centre- State Science Conclave on Saturday via video conferencing.
• The two-day conclave is being organised at Science City, Ahmedabad on September 10-11 and will include sessions on different thematic areas including STI vision 2047, future growth pathways and vision for STI in states; health--digital health care for all; doubling private sector investment in R&D by 2030; and agriculture - technological interventions for improving farmers.

• President Droupadi Murmu will virtually launch the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan today to reinvigorate the mission of TB elimination from the country by 2025.

• Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who was on a three-day visit to Mongolia, received a unique present from the East Asian country’s president.
• Mongolia’s president Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh gifted Singh a majestic horse, seven years after Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a similar gift from the leadership of this country.
• Singh, who is the first Indian Defence Minister to visit Mongolia, named the majestic beast ‘Tejas’, after the Indian fighter aircraft.
• In 2015, Prime Minister Modi received a special gift a brown racehorse from his then Mongolian counterpart Chimed Saikhanbileg during his historic visit to this country. The horse was named Kanthaka’.
• Mongolia is known as the land of the horse, according to the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH).

• Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar inaugurated the country’s largest rubber dam and a steel bridge over the Falgu River near Vishnupad temple in Gaya.
• Gaya is the land of salvation (moksha). Lakhs of pilgrims from across the country and abroad come to Gaya to perform ‘pindadaan’ rituals.
• The dam has been built at an estimated cost of ₹324crore.

• Olympic gold medallist javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra achieved yet another historic feat as he became the first Indian to win the prestigious Diamond League Finals title.

• India ranks 132 out of 191 countries in the Human Development Index (HDI) 2021, after registering a decline in its score over two consecutive years for the first time in three decades.
• Among India’s neighbours, Sri Lanka (73rd), China (79th), Bangladesh (129th) and Bhutan (127th) are ranked above India, while Pakistan (161st), Nepal (143rd) and Myanmar (149th) are worse off.
• India's HDI value of 0.633 places the country in the medium human development category, lower than its value of 0.645 in the 2020 report. 
• India ranked 131 among 189 countries in the 2020 human development index.
• Switzerland remained at the top spot, followed by Norway and Iceland. South Sudan, Chad and Niger were three countries at the bottom of the list.
• The HDI measures progress on 3 key dimensions of human development - a long and healthy life, access to education, and a decent standard of living. It is calculated using four indicators - life expectancy at birth, mean years of schooling, expected years of schooling, and the Gross National Income (GNI) per capita.

• NITI Aayog, in collaboration with World Resources Institute (WRI), India, launched the country’s first national electric freight platform – e-FAST India (Electric Freight Accelerator for Sustainable Transport – India).
• The platform also aims to raise awareness on freight electrification bolstered by on-ground demonstration pilots and evidence-based research.
• It will also support scalable pilots and inform policies aimed at accelerating freight electrification in India.
• The launch of the e-FAST India platform witnessed participation from major automobile industry players, logistics companies, development banks and fin-tech companies.

• The Odisha government has started community harnessing and harvesting of rainwater artificially from Terrace to Aquifer (CHHATA) scheme, aimed at rejuvenating and improving water resources, groundwater.
• It was recently approved by the state cabinet with an investment of Rs 270 crore.
• It has been implemented for a period of five years.
• Under the scheme, which has been conceptualized to address the increasing stress on groundwater and to improve the depleting groundwater table, a target has been set to harvest 373.52 crore litres of water in five years.
• The scheme will be implemented in 29,500 Private Buildings and 1,925 Government Buildings covering water-stressed 52 blocks and 27 urban local bodies of the State
• There is a subsidy provision of Rs 55,000 or 50% of the cost of the RRHS, whichever is less in this scheme to encourage the public for adopting the scheme in their buildings.

• Miss Earth India 2021 Rashmi Madhuri passed her crown to the Winner of Miss Earth India 2022 Vanshika Parmar.

• Standing Committee of the National Board of Wildlife, which is led by Union environment minister Bhupender Yadav has approved the proposal of new IAF base in Ladakh.
• The new base will be built on 500 hectares of land in the Changthang sanctuary area, right next to the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
• The Changthang sanctuary area is a cold desert sanctuary in Leh district.  It is home to Tibetan wild Ass, Kiang and the rare black necked cranes.
• Currently, the IAF's key air base in Ladakh is located at Leh.

• Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, who was the second-longest reigning monarch in history, after France's Louis XIV, died at the age of 96.
• Elizabeth came to the throne in February 1952 following the death of her father, George VI. 
• On 9th Sept 2015, Queen Elizabeth II became the longest reining British Monarch surpassing her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria.
• Queen Victoria had been on the throne for 63 years, 7 months, 2 days, 16 hours and 23 minutes.

• Padma Shri awardee Ramchandra Manjhi, whose performance in Bhojpuri folk dance ‘Naach’ for eight decades, has passed away. He was a famous performer of ‘Launda Naach’, a sub-set of ‘Naach’, in which men crossdress as women.
• His passion for the dance form even in old age has brought him several honours, including Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2017) and Padma Shri (2021).
• Manjhi was the last scion of the legendary Bhikhari Thakur’s ‘Naach’ form of folk dance.
