The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, launched in 2020 has completed five years of transforming India’s fisheries sector into a sustainable and globally competitive industry. Fish production touched a record 195 lakh tonnes in 2024–25, making India the second-largest producer worldwide, while exports rose to ₹60,524 crore. The scheme has created 58 lakh jobs, empowered over 99,000 women, and promoted modern aquaculture technologies. 

Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, launched the UPI-UPU Integration Project at the 28th Universal Postal Congress in Dubai. The initiative aims to integrate India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with the Universal Postal Union’s (UPU) Interconnection Platform, enabling faster, safer, and low-cost cross-border remittances. With this, people across 192 UPU member countries will be able to send money seamlessly through postal networks.

Telecommunications Consultants India Limited (TCIL) and Punjab National Bank (PNB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on September 3 to strengthen IT infrastructure and accelerate technological transformation. Under this partnership, TCIL will provide IT consultancy, project management, and technical solutions to PNB. The collaboration will help the bank adopt new technologies faster, ensure secure operations, and deliver quicker and more digital services to its customers.

AIIMS-Delhi has launched “Never Alone”, an AI-powered mental health app aimed at preventing student suicides and improving psychological well-being. The app, also rolled out at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar and IHBAS Delhi, offers 24/7 support through WhatsApp and web platforms, with nationwide expansion planned. The initiative, backed by the Global Centre of Integrative Health and AIIMS psychiatry experts, seeks to reduce stigma, close treatment gaps, and provide early, discreet intervention for India’s youth—among whom suicide is a growing crisis.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has unveiled its flagship “Will to Win” campaign ahead of the Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, celebrating determination, resilience, and the transformation of women’s cricket. India will host the tournament after 12 years, with matches scheduled from 30 September to 2 November 2025 across five venues: DY Patil Stadium (Navi Mumbai), ACA Stadium (Guwahati), Holkar Stadium (Indore), ACA-VDCA Stadium (Visakhapatnam), and R Premadasa Stadium (Colombo, Sri Lanka).

Srinivas Injeti, retired IAS officer of the 1983 batch, has been appointed Chairperson of the NSE Governing Board with SEBI approval. He previously led reforms as Corporate Affairs Secretary and was founding Chairperson of IFSCA (2020–23). His experience in governance and finance comes at a key time as NSE prepares for its long-delayed IPO. 

India announced a USD 680 million Special Economic Package during Mauritius PM Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam’s visit to New Delhi. The package includes a new 500-bed hospital, AYUSH Centre, Veterinary School, airport and port development, 100 electric buses, and a 17.5 MW floating solar plant. PM Modi called it “an investment in a shared future”, strengthening India–Mauritius ties in healthcare, infrastructure, energy, and maritime security.

Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have agreed to resume nuclear inspections after a suspension caused by Israeli and US strikes and the killing of Iranian scientists. The deal allows monitoring while respecting Iranian sovereignty, though access remains limited with the Bushehr plant open to inspectors. Egypt helped facilitate the talks, marking a cautious step toward renewed nuclear oversight amid regional tensions.

ISRO, NSIL, IN-SPACe, and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) signed a landmark pact to transfer Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) technology, marking IN-SPACe’s 100th technology transfer. HAL, India’s premier aerospace and defence company, will absorb the technology over 24 months and then produce SSLVs for 10 years, enabling it to independently build and commercialize launch vehicles. The move positions India as a global hub for affordable small satellite launches.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurated India’s first overseas Atal Innovation Centre at the IIT Delhi–Abu Dhabi campus, marking a boost to India–UAE cooperation in education and innovation. The launch also introduced a Ph.D. in Energy and Sustainability and B.Tech in Chemical Engineering programs. Discussions with UAE officials focused on expanding Indian curriculum schools, setting up Atal Innovation Labs, and promoting student-teacher exchanges. Part of the Atal Innovation Mission, the centre aims to foster research, entrepreneurship and global collaboration.

Amid the devastating floods in Punjab, the Indian Army has launched a large-scale relief mission named ‘Operation Rahat’. Army personnel are actively rescuing stranded people and providing essential aid in flood-affected areas. The operation has deployed helicopters like ALH, MI-17, Cheetah, and Chinook to support rescue and supply efforts. It is being carried out in coordination with the local administration, NDRF, and SDRF to ensure faster and more effective relief operations.

The Ministry of Tribal Affairs launched the beta version of the digital platform “Aadi Sanskriti” in New Delhi, aimed at preserving tribal art, culture, and traditions while linking them to livelihoods. The platform has three key components – Aadi University, offering 45 digital courses; Aadi Sampada, a repository of over 5,000 cultural documents; and Aadi Haat, an online marketplace. Minister of State Durga Das Uikey said this initiative marks an important step towards tribal culture preservation and empowerment.

NITI Aayog, in collaboration with UNDP, organized a one-day workshop on the National Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI). Representatives from 30 states, the central government, UN agencies, and think tanks participated. The workshop was chaired by NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Suman K. Bery, where experts highlighted the importance of MPI in poverty eradication, sustainable development goals, and better governance. Discussions focused on data-driven decision-making in social security schemes, the technical methodology of MPI, and the “Leave No One Behind” (LNOB) analysis.

World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) 2025 is being observed, September 10, with the theme “Changing the Narrative on Suicide” (2024–2026). The campaign highlights the urgent need to challenge stigma, break harmful myths, and encourage open, compassionate conversations about suicide, which takes over 720,000 lives globally each year. Launched by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and WHO in 2003, WSPD promotes awareness, education, and policy action to strengthen mental health care and support systems.

An Indian Armed Forces contingent has reached Nizhniy, Russia, to take part in the multilateral military exercise Zapad 2025 at the Mulino Training Ground. Hosted by Russia, the drills focus on high-intensity conventional warfare, counter-terrorism, and joint tactical operations with partner nations. The exercise, held every four years since 2009, includes participation from the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. It aims to boost defence cooperation, interoperability, and operational synergy, while strengthening India–Russia strategic ties.

UNICEF’s Child Nutrition Report 2025 warns of a sharp rise in childhood obesity, fueled by ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and aggressive digital marketing. The report notes that 5% of under-5 children and 20% of those aged 5–19 are overweight, with obesity (9.4%) now surpassing underweight (9.2%). South Asia has seen overweight cases among 5–19-year-olds grow nearly fivefold since 2000. Policy gaps remain severe, only 7% of countries mandate clear food labels and just 8% subsidize healthy foods.

At the World Archery Championships 2025 held in Gwangju, South Korea, India clinched its first-ever gold medal in the men’s compound team event. The team of Rishabh Yadav, Aman Saini, and Prathamesh Fuge defeated France with a score of 235-233, marking a proud milestone and giving India global recognition in compound archery.

The Rajasthan Assembly has passed the Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Bill, 2025, aimed at preventing conversions through force, fraud, inducement or marriage. Both the person converting and the religious converter must file declarations with the District Magistrate, who will conduct inquiries and invite objections. The Bill prescribes 7–14 years in jail and a fine of ₹5 lakh for unlawful conversions, with stricter punishments for minors, women, differently abled persons and SC/ST communities (10–20 years, ₹10 lakh fine). In cases of mass conversion, the penalty may extend to life imprisonment and ₹25 lakh fine.

Himachal Pradesh has been declared a fully literate state with a literacy rate of 99.3%, surpassing the national benchmark of 95%. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu made the announcement on International Literacy Day in Shimla. From just 7% literacy in 1947, the state has achieved near-universal literacy through reforms, better infrastructure, and teacher training. Himachal also ranks first in student-teacher ratio and is focusing on digital and skill-based education. With this feat, Himachal joins Mizoram, Tripura, Goa, and Ladakh (UT) as fully literate regions of India.

The Supreme Court has ruled that Aadhaar cards will now be accepted as the 12th valid identity document for voter verification in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the Bihar Assembly elections. The court clarified that Aadhaar will be valid only for identity purposes and not as proof of citizenship. The Election Commission has been directed to implement a process for verifying Aadhaar details. This move aims to enhance the accuracy of the voter list and ensure proper identification of genuine voters.

The Ministry of Tribal Affairs and Coal India Limited (CIL) signed an MoU to empower over 30,000 tribal students across 76 Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS). Under this initiative, facilities such as computers, tablets, sanitary pad vending machines, and other resources will be provided to enhance digital education, health, nutrition, and career guidance for the students.

On 9 September 2025 in New Delhi, iDEX-DIO and EdCIL (India) Limited signed an MoU under the ASPIRE programme for the development of cutting-edge dual-use technologies. The objective of this partnership is to integrate defence expertise with ed-tech solutions and leverage the startup ecosystem to foster innovation. This initiative is considered a significant step towards addressing national challenges and developing indigenous, scalable technologies for both the defence and civilian sectors.

The National Cooperative Export Limited (NCEL) and the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) have signed a historic MoU to promote cooperative-based agricultural exports. This partnership will provide farmers with access to international markets, ensure better prices for their produce and take India’s agricultural exports to new heights. The initiative is seen as an important step towards building a strong cooperative export ecosystem in line with the objectives of the National Cooperative Policy 2025.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change organized the Swachh Vayu Survey Awards 2025 and the Wetland City Recognition Ceremony. Union Minister Bhupender Yadav felicitated the best-performing cities across the country. Under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), 130 cities were evaluated, out of which 11 were selected for outstanding performance. According to the survey, Indore maintained its leading streak, securing a perfect score of 200/200, and ranked first among cities with a population of over 1 million. Jabalpur came second with 199 points, while Agra and Surat jointly secured the third spot. In the category of cities with populations between 300,000 and 1 million, Amravati topped with a perfect 200 points. Jhansi and Moradabad jointly came second, and Alwar secured third place. Among cities with populations under 300,000, Dewas ranked first, Parwanoo second, and Angul third. Adding to its achievements, Indore, along with Udaipur, received international recognition as ‘Wetland Cities’ under the Ramsar Convention for their contributions to urban wetland conservation.

The Australian government has purchased large, autonomous underwater drones called “Ghost Shark” for the Royal Navy at a cost of $1.7 billion. These drones can operate secretly over long distances without a crew and are designed for intelligence, surveillance, and attack missions. Measuring 5.8 meters in length, they can function up to 6,000 meters underwater. The drones are set to be deployed in the Navy from January 2026. This move is significant for enhancing Australia’s maritime military capabilities and strengthening its position in the Indo-Pacific region.

At the FIDE Grand Swiss 2025 in Samarkand, 16-year-old American Grandmaster Abhimanyu Mishra made history by defeating World Champion D. Gukesh Dommaraju. Mishra has now become the youngest player to defeat a reigning World Champion in chess. This victory showcased Mishra’s talent and composure, generating excitement across the global chess community.

Amid violent protests in Nepal against the social media ban and corruption, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned. The protests began as an expression of youth anger but later turned violent, resulting in at least 19 deaths and over 300 injuries. The Nepalese government had banned 26 major social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube, as they failed to comply with government registration requirements. Even after the ban was lifted, the protests continued, with young people launching a widespread movement against corruption and political discontent.

On 9 September 2025, C.P. Radhakrishnan was elected as the 15th Vice President of India. He defeated the opposition’s candidate, former Supreme Court judge B. Sudarshan Reddy, by a margin of 152 votes. Out of a total of 767 Members of Parliament, 752 votes were valid, with Radhakrishnan securing 452 and Reddy 300. The election was held following the resignation of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar due to health reasons. Born on 20 October 1957 in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, Radhakrishnan began his political career with the RSS and Jan Sangh and was elected as a Member of Parliament from Coimbatore in 1998 and 1999. He has also served as the BJP’s Tamil Nadu state president, a member of several parliamentary committees, and as the Governor of Jharkhand, Telangana, Puducherry, and Maharashtra.

Ethiopia inaugurated the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the Blue Nile River, which has a power generation capacity of 5,150 megawatts. This project will double Ethiopia’s energy production capacity. However, Egypt and Sudan have expressed concerns over GERD. Egypt described it as a “threat to collective existence” and raised worries about potential impacts on water flow.

The first "Sunrise Festival" will be held in Dong Village, Anjaw district, Arunachal Pradesh, from December 29, 2025, to January 2, 2026. This village is the easternmost point of India, where the sun’s rays are first visible every day. The festival aims to promote tourism, adventure sports, cultural heritage, and local entrepreneurship. During this five-day festival, activities such as traditional cuisine, tribal cultural performances, handicrafts, adventure trekking, and eco-tourism will be organized. Participants will also get the opportunity to climb the hills of Dong and witness India’s first sunrise.

The two-day DialogNext 2025 Conference is being held on September 8–9 at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Convention Centre, New Delhi. Organized by the World Food Prize Foundation in partnership with CIMMYT, the Borlaug Institute for South Asia (BISA), and ICAR, this high-level event focuses on identifying and accelerating transformative innovations to secure the world’s food future. This year’s theme, “Take It to the Farmer,” continues the farmer-oriented agenda of last year’s DialogNext held in Mexico. The objective of the conference is to ensure that transformative agricultural solutions reach smallholder farmers across the Global South.

The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment observed World Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) Day across the country. This year’s theme was “Family: The Centre of Care”, aimed at promoting sensitivity, support, and inclusivity for affected children and their families. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a rare and progressively worsening disease that gradually weakens muscles, impacting mobility, respiration, and heart function in children.

India and Israel signed a historic Bilateral Investment Agreement (BIA) in New Delhi. The agreement aims to boost investments in both countries, provide security and transparency to investors, and establish an independent dispute resolution mechanism. Under this pact, investments will be protected from expropriation, with provisions for transparency and compensation. Israeli investors will now have the option of international arbitration within three years in case of disputes in India. Currently, bilateral investments between the two nations stand at around USD 800 million. The agreement is expected to strengthen India-Israel economic ties and open new avenues of cooperation in cybersecurity, innovation, technology, and digital payments.

Younus Ahamed, a Non-Resident Indian businessman from Palakkad and Executive Director of Middle East Dotspace Coworking, was awarded the Camel International Award 2025 by Arabian World Records. The award was presented by Sheikh Matar Bin Huwaiden Al Ketbi, chairman of the Sharjah Camel Racing Club, during a ceremony held in Dubai. Younus Ahamed received this prestigious recognition for his outstanding contributions and exemplary leadership in the business world on an international platform.

Nepal and China’s armed forces commenced the fifth edition of the joint military exercise “Sagarmatha Friendship-2025” in Kathmandu from 6 to 16 September 2025. The primary objective of the exercise is to enhance counter-terrorism capabilities, disaster management, and cooperation in United Nations peacekeeping operations. The exercise includes activities such as counter-terrorism operations, war strategy drills, disaster relief exercises, joint operations, and knowledge-sharing sessions. The Sagarmatha Friendship exercise has been held since 2017 and takes place alternately in Nepal and China.

Max Verstappen won the 2025 Italian Grand Prix at Monza with a dominant performance, converting his pole position into victory. He set the record for the fastest race in Formula 1 history, completing 53 laps in 1 hour, 13 minutes, and 24.32 seconds, breaking Michael Schumacher's 2003 record. Verstappen finished nearly 20 seconds ahead of McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, who secured second and third places respectively.

In Hisor, Tajikistan, India secured a thrilling victory over Oman in the third-place playoff of the CAFA Nations Cup 2025. Oman took the lead in the 55th minute, but Udanta Singh scored a crucial equalizer for India in the 80th minute. The winner was decided by a penalty shootout, where India triumphed 3-2. Gurpreet Singh Sandhu starred in the shootout, saving three penalties from Oman and ensuring India’s victory. This win holds special significance for India, as they defeated a higher-ranked Oman team (79th in FIFA rankings) while India is ranked 133rd.

Union Minister of Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh inaugurated the International Space Conference 2025, highlighting India’s ambitious space plans and its commitment to global cooperation. He was virtually addressing the inaugural session of the conference, organized on the theme “Harnessing Space for Global Progress: Innovation, Policy and Growth.” Emphasizing space as a powerful medium for everyday life and global advancement, he outlined the goal of establishing an Indian Space Station by 2035 and landing an Indian astronaut on the Moon by 2040.

In Khurja, Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, the world’s first park made entirely from ceramic waste, 'Anokhi Duniya', has been established. Built at a cost of ₹5.86 crore under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, the park features over 100 artworks created from 80 tons of ceramic waste, including large installations made from broken pitchers, cups, and kettles. Six artists and 120 skilled craftsmen contributed to its creation. The park also offers a gaming zone, selfie points, and a café for children. This initiative aims to boost local employment, strengthen Khurja’s global ceramic identity, and promote environmental conservation through a waste-to-art concept.
