- The government will open a one-time disclosure window from August 16, 2026, allowing small taxpayers to declare certain undisclosed foreign assets and foreign income under a scheme announced in the Union Budget 2026-27.
- The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has operationalised the Foreign Assets of Small Taxpayers–Disclosure Scheme, 2026, which was notified under Chapter IV of the Finance Act, 2026. The disclosure window will remain open until December 31, 2026.

Iran Announces $30,000 Bounty for Killing or Capturing U.S. Soldiers:
- Iran’s military announced on Sunday that it would offer a bounty equivalent to $30,000 for killing or capturing U.S. soldiers, with the reward doubled if the act was carried out by a woman.
- Army chief Amir Hatami said the plan had been prepared following “the large number of requests” to participate in providing financial support, according to the IRNA state news agency.
- There has been no known deployment of United States ground forces in Iran during the West Asia war, except for a rescue mission in April involving a downed American pilot.
- Mr. Hatami did not provide details regarding where or when the killing or capture of U.S. soldiers was expected to take place.
India’s Q1 FY27 GDP Growth Estimated at 8%, Says SBI Research:
- India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth during the first quarter of the current financial year is estimated at 8 per cent, according to a report published by SBI Research. The estimate is higher than the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) projection of 7 per cent.
- The report noted that robust consumption and demand indicators continue to demonstrate the resilience of the Indian economy. It stated that, except for a few indicators, India’s industrial growth remains quite satisfactory. The services sector, which is the largest contributor to economic growth, also showed encouraging signs, with all indicators except freight and passenger traffic supporting the prospect of impressive growth in Q1.

- An Indian Army contingent has departed for Thailand to participate in the 15th edition of the MAITREE-XV joint military exercise.
- The exercise will involve company-level joint training focused on counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency missions in jungle and semi-urban environments under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter.
- The training programme will include field exercises, tactical discussions, equipment and technology displays, and a concluding validation exercise.

India Pulls Out of ASEAN Cup to Prioritise Brazil Friendly:
- India has withdrawn from the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup, choosing to prioritise its high-profile international friendly against five-time World champion Brazil in October.
- The development was confirmed by All India Football Federation (AIFF) Deputy Secretary General M. Satyanarayanan on Thursday.
- India’s withdrawal means that the team will miss the opportunity to compete against some of Southeast Asia’s leading sides in a FIFA-sanctioned competition.
- The inaugural tournament was conceived as a new international competition for teams from the ASEAN region, with India invited as one of the non-ASEAN participants.
- India had initially accepted FIFA’s invitation and was subsequently placed in Division 1, Group A, alongside Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.
- The competition is scheduled to take place during the September 21–October 6 FIFA international window.
‘Yuva Shakti’ Theme to Mark 80th Independence Day:
- The energy and aspirations of Gen Z and “Yuva Shakti” will take centre stage during the 80th Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort on August 15.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the celebrations, while the National Song Vande Mataram will be rendered at the historic venue for the first time.

Tamil Nadu Assembly Passes Resolution to Freeze Lok Sabha Seats:
- The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly has passed a resolution urging the Union Government to retain the total number of Lok Sabha seats at the present 543 during future delimitation exercises in order to protect the representation of States.
- Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, enclosing a copy of the resolution moved by him and adopted by the Assembly on August 12. The resolution urged the Centre to amend the Constitution to freeze the number of Lok Sabha seats at 543 and maintain the existing proportion of inter-State distribution of seats.
- The resolution also called for the implementation of 33% reservation for women from the upcoming Lok Sabha election on the basis of the existing strength of 543 seats and subsequently in Assembly elections, Mr. Vijay pointed out.
Parliament Passes Bill to Rename Kerala as ‘Keralam’:
- Parliament has passed the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026, with the Rajya Sabha approving the legislation today, following its passage in the Lok Sabha yesterday.
- The Bill proposes to change the name of the State from Kerala to Keralam in the First Schedule of the Constitution.
- Replying to the debate on the Bill, Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said that the Kerala Legislative Assembly had passed a resolution in 2024 requesting the Centre to change the State’s name from Kerala to Keralam. He noted that the State is called Keralam in Malayalam, whereas the Constitution currently refers to it as Kerala.
Death Sentence for Syria’s Former President Bashar al-Assad:
- A court in Damascus has sentenced ousted former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his brother Maher al-Assad to death in absentia for crimes against humanity, murder and systemic torture committed during Syria’s civil war.
- Those convicted include Bashar al-Assad, his brother Maher al-Assad, his cousin Atef Najib, and several other former regime officials.
- The charges include premeditated murder, intentional killing of children, arbitrary arrests, torture and crimes against humanity.
US Mandates Online-Only Filing for Major Visas and Green Cards:
- The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has issued a new rule requiring mandatory online filing for key immigration forms, including green card applications and citizenship processing.
- The U.S. government issued an interim final rule on August 11, 2026, authorising USCIS to mandate online-only electronic filing for immigration forms that have been available digitally for at least 180 days.
- USCIS will be required to announce any mandatory online filing requirement on its website at least 60 days before it takes effect for a particular form.
- Applicants unable to file online because of a proven hardship may seek a paper exemption waiver. If approved, the waiver will carry a $25 fee.
US Federal Court Dismisses Criminal Charges Against Gautam Adani:
- A US federal court has permanently dismissed criminal fraud and bribery charges against Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani and his nephew Sagar Adani, bringing the high-profile case initiated in late 2024 to an end.
- U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis approved the Justice Department’s motion to dismiss the charges with prejudice.
- The charges were originally filed in November 2024, when prosecutors accused the executives of involvement in a scheme concerning more than $250 million in alleged bribes to Indian officials for solar contracts, while allegedly concealing the matter from US lenders.
- The U.S. Department of Justice moved to drop the prosecution, citing evidentiary and jurisdictional challenges, as the core conduct had allegedly taken place outside the United States.
TVK Government’s First Investment Meet Attracts ₹67,542 Crore in Commitments:
- The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government signed 97 memoranda of understanding, involving investment commitments of more than ₹67,542 crore, at its first major investment conclave, the ‘Vettri Tamil Nadu Investment Conclave 2026’, on Thursday.
- The MoUs were exchanged in the presence of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.
- Minister for Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce S. Keerthana said that with the day’s announcements, cumulative investment commitments during the first 100 days of the government would cross ₹1 lakh crore and could generate more than 1.2 lakh jobs.
- She added that, on average, this represented ₹1,000 crore in committed capital for every single day the government had been in office. Her address was broadcast live through a YouTube feed from the venue.
Squadron Leader Bhawana Kanth Becomes India’s First Woman Fighter Combat Leader:
- Squadron Leader Bhawana Kanth has become the first woman to graduate from the Indian Air Force’s elite “Top Gun” school.
- In 2021, Bhawana Kanth had already created history by becoming the first woman fighter pilot to march in the Republic Day parade and was one of India’s original pioneering trio of women fighter pilots.
- Squadron Leader Kanth has now completed the demanding Fighter Combat Leader Course, comprising 20 weeks of the most advanced combat flying training offered by the IAF.
- Only about one in 100 pilots is selected to even attempt the course.
Sumit Sarkar, Eminent Scholar of Modern Indian History, Dies at 87:
- Eminent Marxist historian and renowned scholar of modern Indian history Sumit Sarkar passed away at a private hospital in New Delhi on Thursday. He was 87.
- He spent several years teaching history at the University of Delhi and was a Fellow of Wolfson College, Oxford. He also served as a visiting professor at several prestigious universities in the United States and Europe.
- His notable works include Swadeshi Movement in Bengal, 1903–1908 (1973), Modern India (1989), and Writing Social History (1998), among others.
- He also co-edited Women and Social Reform in Modern India (2007) and Caste in Modern India (2013) with his wife, Tanika Sarkar.
- Sumit Sarkar completed his BA (Honours) in History at Presidency College, Kolkata, before pursuing his Master’s degree and Ph.D. at the University of Calcutta. His former students and colleagues remembered him not only as a “doyen of historians” but also as the “kindest of human beings.”
